I stumbled across a recipe for homemade nail polish remover and decided to give it a try. First, I must confess that polished nails are not part of my routine. It takes way too much effort to keep them looking nice and keeping polish on too long makes my nails brittle. With that being said, I may paint the piggies for a special event, especially during the summer months.
Homemade solutions get me excited, especially when I have all the ingredients on hand. So when I found a nail polish remover recipe on Dr. Josh Axe’s website I decided I had to see if it really worked. I altered it a little to make a smaller batch and based on what I had on hand. DIY Nail Polish Remover
1/4 cup organic apple cider vinegar
6 drops of grapefruit essential oil
7 drops of lemon essential oil
1/4 cup rubbing alcohol
1. Pour the apple cider vinegar into a small bowl.
2. Add the essential oils and rubbing alcohol.
3. Blend well and store in a sealed and marked bottle.
Does it work?
Mostly. Be prepared to rub a little longer and a little harder, but the polish did come off. I think next time I’ll try the recommendation of soaking my nails for a short time in the solution to see if the polish comes off easier. As far as ditching store bought polish? If you’re trying to remove as many toxins as possible and you don’t mind the extra time it’s definitely a viable option.
